How to Upgrade Your Wardrobe for the New Year in 9 Easy Steps

If you’re anything like the rest of the world, you likely set some resolutions and goals for the new year. Whether you made a resolution to up your style game or not, this is a great opportunity to give your closet a fresh start. Plus, when you look good, you feel good. All of that positive energy can help you feel confident as you chase down your other goals.

Still, refreshing your wardrobe can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve done it. That’s why we’ve created the following straightforward steps to get looking good in the coming year.

How to Upgrade Your Closet

1.   Take It All Out

The first step to refreshing your wardrobe is knowing what you have. That can be hard to do, especially if your clothing is stashed in multiple closets and dressers. Collect all of your clothing and put it on a big surface, like a table or bed.

As you lay your clothing out, try to put it in piles. Keep tops with tops and bottoms with bottoms. Organize by style, like casual or dressy. This will help you assess what you really have on hand and what could be missing.

2.   Figure Out What You Wear Often

Next, figure out what clothes you reach for often. Why are these your favorite pieces? A few reasons could be:

  • The color suits you.
  • The item fits well.
  • The clothing is comfortable.
  • The item is a necessity due to your job or hobbies.

Take note of what you like and why. You can use this to guide future purchases while avoiding getting more of the same.

3. Opt for Tailoring

Are there any items that you don’t reach for because they don’t fit well? Consider bringing these pieces to a tailor. You may also take a look at the items you do wear often and check that they fit properly. Hemming a pair of jeans or replacing a missing button can make a big difference in your overall appearance.

5. Consider What’s Missing

Now for the fun part: deciding what you need. This will be highly dependent on your closet, but every man needs some variation of the following essentials:

  • Casual tops: T-shirts and Henleys
  • Dressy tops: Polos, button-up shirts, and high-quality sweaters for winter
  • Jackets: At least one casual jacket and one dressier jacket
  • Pants: A few pairs of denim, khakis, and chinos
  • The basics: Pajamas, workout gear, underwear, and socks

You might look at the piles you’ve created and find that you’re lacking in a certain area. For example, let’s say you have a ton of t-shirts and few other top options. In that case, you’ll need to invest in some polos, Henleys, and button-ups.

6. Invest In Key Pieces

Aside from the above, you’ll also need to have a few key items that can elevate your wardrobe and serve multiple purposes.

First, you’ll need a suit for special occasions, weddings, and work events. We recommend getting suit separates that you can mix and match for different events. This way, you can pair the pants with a button-up, the jacket with jeans, or wear them together for the look of a full suit.

Jackets are another important category to have covered. Adding a jacket (or even a high-quality sweater) as a third piece can make any outfit appear smarter. Consider buying a denim or leather jacket for a casual piece. For a dressier option, you’ll need a bomber jacket or peacoat.

7. Think About Color

Another way to majorly upgrade your closet is to consider your color palette. Some colors look better on you than others, depending on your hair, skin, and eyes. Not sure what looks best on you? Start by determining your undertone.

You can do this by looking at the veins in your wrist. If your veins show through your skin and appear blue, you have a light undertone. If they look more green than blue, you have a warm undertone. Another easy way to tell is by thinking about what your skin does in the sun. If you burn easily, you likely have a lighter undertone. If you tend to tan, you have a warmer undertone.

If you have a cool undertone, you will look best in:

If you have a warm undertone, you will look best in:

  • Off-white
  • Taupe
  • Earth tones
  • Orange
  • Yellow

Now, look at your existing wardrobe. Consider what colors you already have and where you can add a pop of color depending on your undertone. You can also evaluate your basics and get more of the neutrals that look best on you (like a crisp white t-shirt for cool undertones or a taupe Henley for warm undertones).

8. Step Into New Shoes

With your clothing sorted out, it’s time to consider your shoes. Every guy needs at least one pair of the following:

  • A pair of dress shoes: Preferably brogues, oxfords, or loafers in black or brown.
  • A pair of leather boots:Depending on what you do for a living, you’ll need either a dressy boot or a work boot to wear to work. More on how to buy the right boots here.
  • A pair of minimalist sneakers: A casual, low-top sneaker you can wear to any casual outing.
  • A pair of athletic sneakers: A performance sneaker you can wear while working out, or more of a chunky dad sneaker to wear when you want to make a statement.

9. Accessorize

The last, but certainly not least, step to updating your wardrobe is accessorizing. In fact, even if you don’t want or need to update much of your clothing, you can completely change up your outfits by updating your accessories.

Your accessory must-haves include:

  • A leather belt (that matches your dress shoes)
  • A leather wallet to match the belt
  • A nice watch with a metal band
  • Sunglasses that suit your face shape
  • Minimal but high-quality jewelry, like a chain, bracelet, or ring
  • Ties, pocket squares, and tie bars for dressier occasions

And just like that, you have a fresh new wardrobe ready to carry you through the upcoming year. Remember, you don’t have to completely swap out your closet for a new one. Focus on getting the basics discussed above down. Once that’s done, you can add jackets, accessories, and shoes to add new flair to any look.
